Bold and distinctive, the straight fringe remains a key trend for spring, with a surprising inspiration: Britt Lower, aka Helly R from Severance.
Hands up who hasn’t at least heard of Severance , the much-discussed TV series of late. Its compelling plot and thought-provoking themes are key to its popularity, alongside its refined retro-futuristic aesthetic. Then there was the hair element – that mesmerising straight fringe that captured everyone’s attention.
We at Estetica also appreciated it for another reason: the hair look of Helly R, one of the show’s protagonists who stands out for two key hair elements. Firstly, her hair colour is a beautiful, vibrant copper, which feels utterly contemporary. Secondly, her cut blends vintage and modern styles, featuring soft waves in the lengths and a slightly textured fringe.
More importantly, Britt Lower, the actress playing Helly R, is a perfect advocate for the straight fringe even off-screen. For some time now, her signature look has consistently featured a fringe, with slight variations in its shape and length. Sometimes it’s perfectly blunt, other times textured, and occasionally full or blended into a side sweep.
The Celeb Micro-Fringe Moment
Truthfully, in these months leading into spring, we’ve noticed more than one celebrity embracing the short, straight fringe. Starting with Lady Gaga, who showcases a striking hime cut in a super dark shade.
Ariana Grande, a Swarovski ambassador, wears a very chic, light, and geometric fringe, almost an homage to Audrey Hepburn.
The Hair Accessory Loved by Stylists
The straight fringe isn’t just a celebrity trend. Due to its versatility and impactful character, hairstylists often feature the straight fringe in salons and major shows. For example, Jordanna Cobella, creative director of Cobella Salon and a renowned hairdresser, created looks for the BHA Hair Show. One look featured a super short fringe with long hair styled with a distinctive band.
In salons, however, it can be paired with a less avant-garde style to add an extra twist to a long, layered haircut. Alternatively, the straight fringe can become a striking graphic element when combined with a rigorously geometric haircut.
